comprehensive coverage? yes, please!

If ever there were a day when i might consider becoming an insurance salesman, today is that day.

Over the weekend we suffered an unfortunate act of vandalism here at World Impact. We were just finishing up a weekend called "Urban Plunge" with college students from Greenville, IL when we heard strange noises outside. Andrew, one of the guys on my staff team went to see what the commotion was and interrupted 4 young men as they were trying to pry open the trunk of another staff member's car, Adria. Andrew yelled, the guys ran and then we surveyed the damage.

Five cars had been broken into. Four belong to our staff members. One belongs to a student here for that weekend trip.

Every car had at least one broken window. Some had two. Poor Adria's car had three. And as if the windows didn't provide enough access, they also did serious damage to my front passenger door handle, so much that you can't even open the door from the outside anymore. On Adria's car they missed the simple to use trunk-pop button inside and tried using a screw driver to open it instead.

In just minutes those 4 guys did thousands of dollars of damage. I know.

This is what my car looked like after that night. Duct tape really can fix almost anything.

It turns out that replacing that little tiny window in the backseat is more expensive than replacing the big windows that roll down. These are the types of things I have learned since I moved here.

Thankfully, I decided early on that I was willing to pay more for better coverage on my car insurance "just in case" something like this happened. It is definitely paying off. The cost to repair that window and the damage done to my door and the interior of my car is more than $1000. But thanks to the wonderful ways deductibles work, I won't be paying anywhere near that much!

So. The lesson here is: pay for the good coverage. You might need it. And with that, I think my time as an insurance salesman is up. Oh and as for my car, it should be good as new in just a few days.
